K Drama Crisis

I would like to bring attention to an issue that I am foreseeing, and this has to do with the k drama phenomenon. I have been a fan of k dramas since 2017; because they are on average light hearted, tame and fun romances. They seemed to create great tv shows without any unnecessary sexual or inappropriate representation. I just got sick of how overtly sexual tv shows of the west had gotten, even sacrificing plot, character development and natural logical story flow just to satiate peoples’ urges.

Just to name a few western TV shows that are absolutely stupid and nonsensical, with unnecessary sexual scenes…

Bridgerton

Emily in Paris

Never Have I Ever

You

I honestly can’t name that many because I stopped watching them years ago. So I am not uptodate whatsoever.

But I am talking about a real threat of the degeneracy we see in shows from the west infiltrating my beloved kdramas, and unfortunately with every new year the kdramas get more and more daring, with a few already crossing the line. I mean just look at the titles and synopsis of the ones already on Netflix for 2023.

These are just general assumptions but either way why are they going for these impressions if its not what it is.

Mask Girl

Encouraging stupid insecurities, and not shaming victim mentality

Destined with You

Too old, probably flavors of feminism and simpish behaviors

Ballerina

I’m sorry but just too unrealistic, women can’t fight for squat

Doona - looks simpish

Love to Hate You - completely simpish and ugly cast

Doctor Cha - feminist and simpish, ugly and not shaming divorced people especially women

Vincenzo - stupid #girlboss trope and feminist

My Name - that actress is the symbol of breaking down everything we love about kdramas, they are going to use her to break down the cute, respectful and modest aspects of the kdramas.

The Interest of Love - boring and stupid,

Agency - completely stupid feminist

And it absolutely baffles me that producers and media think this is what their consumers want to watch. Am I the only one feeling groomed and impressed upon with these nuanced stories.

You could argue that they have to do this because they have to push new and exciting things to stay relevant and make money, because people love variety. I would agree with this if they still prioritized good writing, plot and character development with good messages. But what we have now are an agenda and propagandized pushed themes and messages under the guise of hip and cool, rebellious content.

I cannot express how much of what makes a good story is actually good and righteous lessons and truths. When we watch a show that we feel is amazing but we don’t know why or how to articulate it; because the acting wasn’t so great, and the setting looked cheap and the filming was a little delayed, it’s because the meaning and purpose behind the show had truth and good story, teaching good lessons. People are attracted to goodness and meaning and truth, so when I see these shows that have so many twists and turns in the relationship and so many misunderstandings and drama, that are completely void of truth. It makes me realize that all of them are the same, the media claims there is so much nuance and new stuff, but it’s all the same.

Here is an idea, create a love story that actually goes about romance the right way, I want to see a k drama that’s purpose is to have two people fall in love in the most easy and perfect way possible, because it’s going to be the recognition of their perfect situation; their realization that their personalities match, their values align, their family connects, their social status is similar that drives their relationship. It’s going to be the acknowledgement that similarity is what builds love that will make this show attractive to the audience, because it is true. And with good writing plot and characters it won’t be boring.
