Love is Blind - Season 5
I am a huge fan of Love is Blind and was super hyped to see the fifth season already airing.
I'm excited to share my thoughts and opinions on the show. Let’s do a general review of the cast before we jump into it.
There are 14 men and women, 28 altogether. Their ages range from 25 - 34. This season parades and very diverse group of individuals. And I can already guess who will couple up.
Alright let’s dive into it.
Episode 1.
We are introduced to all the contestants, and the first thing I notice is they picked a really frumpy group of individuals - where are the attractive people at?
The best ones are Johnie and Taylor for the women, but Taylor is still overweight and Johnie has a weird side profile.
And the guys are more average and below average than the girls. I’d say Izzy and Carter are the best ones. But I don’t think the show will follow Carter at all.
Another thing about this cast is that everyone is old; there are only 4 women under 30 of the 14 and none younger than 25, Taylor is one of the youngest at 26. Out of the men there are 5 under thirty, none under 25 out of the 14.
This is not good, as women, they are looking for someone who is better than them in every way and age is literally the first thing a girl will judge. So the women are too old, I doubt there will be a lot of matches.
This is my criticism of every main focused person:
And again, these are very flattering photos.
One of the big problems I have with the show is that it is ambiguous about what the Blind traits are.
They say you won’t determine the partner based on their looks, weight/health, age, and income.
You will determine a partner from personality, values, and character.
And I think looks is the only valid superficial attribute to isolate. The other traits are too integral to what makes up a person.
Now one thing missed in the show is that the sound of the person's voice subconsciously or consciously attracts people anyways, but I guess they didn’t see that as a potential problem– whatever, I digress.
Furthermore, I’d say that the physical impression is what tells you if that mystery person in the pods is lying about their character and values.
For example, if one of the girls says she loves being active and feminine, and the guy believes her but then when he meets her she is a shaved head, tattooed hippopotamus of a woman. It’s either she’s lying or just delusional, either way it’s not what he wanted. If he had just seen her, he would not have wasted his time, and no one would end up hurt.
I can already tell that this season is going to be a unique one because of the advanced age. The conversations are a little more raw and focused. And it’s interesting that everyone is recognizing that they have to settle because they are older and have made mistakes in their life. (Accountability!)
I’m so excited to see nature take its course and some of the women are being judged for their pasts.
I know this is a really long rant for episode one that didn’t really mention anything in the first episode, so let me give you specifics now.
The core group seems to be the ones listed above, I am struggling to have interest in anybody’s relationship except for Izzy and Stacy, and Johnie, and Taylor and Jared. All the others just annoy me.
I’ll give my general impressions of each of the core here as well.

In this episode a lot happens and people start partnering up quickly. Ismael hit it off with Johnie and Stacy, but I also think he was leading on Lydia. I know he’s probably just being nice, but that is a flaw of his; that he wasn’t shutting down her obvious comments of how she loves him and he’s her first choice.
His relationship with Stacy seems like the one he is going to choose because he is a less masculine man from being raised by his mother and aunt so he will be drawn to older more confident and assertive women. He is deficient in the role of the provider and lacks the innate want in a man to take care of a younger and innocent flower of a woman.
Jared and Taylor hit it off from the start. I think that they will make it through the experiment because them committing to each other right off the bat and not giving anymore attention to anyone else speaks volumes of their maturity and character. I do think Jared P. is more soft and she’s going to be more hardline, but he seems like the guy who can quickly adjust if he sees she is right.
* Their moment of doing push ups as a punishment for yawning or not giving full attention was so adorable to me and Taylor decided to do it too – was sooo cute! (ep. 1 - 45:00)
Lydia – boy, is this girl a mess, she is going for a guy way out of her league and I don’t think she knows it. She also recognizes that Milton is too young for her, she has at least some traditional catholic cultural roots driving her.
Johnie and Chris seem too much like friends and I don’t think she’s going to choose him, because she is addicted to the bad boys from her past.
Here is a chart for which contestants think age is a factor or not, now some may not have explicitly said, but I am also taking into account the age of who they chose.
This is coming from the presupposition of that the girl should be younger than the guy.
Age doesn’t Matter
Milton ✓
Stacy ✓
Ismael ✓
Chris ✓
Johnie* ✓
Age Matters
Lydia ✓
Aaliyah ✓
Uche ✓
Johnie* ✓
* I find it interesting that Johnie acknowledges that it matters but not for herself—probably because she knows she is too old so thinks it’s great that a guy doesn’t see it like that.
Guys should be older. I think when the girl is older it’s weird. And I think everyone innately knows this, so for a guy to deny this is weird and a red flag. But it is more understandable for a girl to claim it doesn’t because it matters way more if we're older and makes us less attractive, so why agree with a truth that determines our value?
So in conclusion, my first impressions told me that this was going to be one of the worst seasons, because everyone is older and experienced and ugly. But I've been intrigued by the different conversation and the general acceptance of the group that they are not ideal and need to compromise. This season feels a little more raw and has harsher judgments–which I am liking.
I recommend this season to motivate me and anyone not to wait until I am advanced in age and messed up to think about marriage.
